Tracfone prepaid wireless phone cards are an excellent way to have cell phone service without a monthly commitment. Tracfone was one of the early pioneers in pay-as-you-go cell phone service. This method allows you to have and use a cell phone without paying monthly fees. Instead, you simply buy Tracfone prepaid wireless phone cards that contain given numbers of cell phone minutes. You add these air time minutes to your phone when your current minutes are running low.

There are two costs associated with using Tracfone prepaid wireless phone cards. First, a Tracfone brand cell phone must be purchased. Basic models can be bought for very little money at most department stores. Next, one or more Tracfone prepaid wireless phone cards must be purchased to put air time into the phone. If you buy 60-minute Tracfone prepaid wireless phone cards, you can talk for 60 minutes on the phone. When those 60-minute cards have been used, you must buy another card.

You need to understand something when buying Tracfone prepaid wireless phone cards. The card you buy may say 60 minutes, but it is really rated for 60 air time units. In most cases, such as local calls, one unit equals one minute. The 60 unit card would really mean 60 minutes of talking. However, long distance roaming, text messaging, and other non-standard phone actions may use up more air time units per minute. Before you do, search the internet for "Tracfone promotional codes" and you can probably find some discount codes redeemable for extra minutes. If you already have a card, visit the website and choose the "Add Airtime" option. The new minutes will appear on your phone immediately.

Note that Tracfone (and maybe other pay-as-you-go providers) require you to add minutes periodically in order to keep your phone service active. Your existing minutes don't expire, but these periodic purchases let Tracfone know that your account is still active. Users of Tracfone prepaid wireless phone cards need to be aware of this stipulation.
